[23-OCT-2018] #OviWatch and #BackstromWatch

As-promised, I'll not be posting on a game day again...

Last night in Vancouver, Ovi scored two more goals, bringing his career total to 615, and his total on the season to 8 goals in 8 games, sliding him up to 6th place on the very young season. Auston Matthews remains at the top of this season's scoring ladder, but if Ovi keeps it up, he will catch and surpass the young centerman. Here's where Ovi stands all-time. Still in 17th, but creeping up on Iginla and Sakic in all-time goal-scoring, career.

01 - Wayne Gretzky    - 894 G in 1487 GP +279
02 - Gordie Howe      - 801 G in 1767 GP +186
03 - Jaromír Jágr     - 765 G in 1714 GP +150
04 - Brett Hull       - 741 G in 1269 GP +126
05 - Marcel Dionne    - 731 G in 1348 GP +116
06 - Phil Esposito    - 717 G in 1282 GP +102
07 - Mike Gartner     - 708 G in 1432 GP + 93
08 - Mark Messier     - 694 G in 1756 GP + 79
09 - Steve Yzerman    - 692 G in 1514 GP + 77
10 - Mario Lemieux    - 690 G in  915 GP + 75
11 - Teemu Selänne    - 684 G in 1451 GP + 68
12 - Luc Robataille   - 667 G in 1431 GP + 52 not bloody likely!
-----------------------------------------------------
13 - Brendan Shanahan - 656 G in 1431 GP + 41 outside chance
-----------------------------------------------------
14 - Dave Andreychuk  - 640 G in 1639 GP + 25 probable
15 - Joe Sakic        - 625 G in 1378 GP + 10
16 - Jarome Iginla    - 625 G in 1554 GP + 10

17 - Alex Ovechkin    - 615 G in 1011 GP

One of Ovi's two goals last night came on the power play, putting him in sole possession of 9th all time for power play goals. His next will tie him with Marcel Dionne; three will tie him with Mario Lemieux.

01 - Dave Andreychuk  - 274 PPG in 1639 GP 16.72% +41
02 - Brett Hull       - 265 PPG in 1269 GP 20.88% +32 not likely
------------------------------------------------------------
03 - Teemu Selanne    - 255 PPG in 1451 GP 17.57% +22 possible
------------------------------------------------------------
04 - Luc Robataille   - 247 PPG in 1431 GP 17.26% +14 probable
05 - Phil Esposito    - 246 PPG in 1282 GP 19.19% +13
06 - Brendan Shanahan - 237 PPG in 1524 GP 15.56% + 4
07 - Mario Lemieux    - 236 PPG in  915 GP 25.79% + 3
08 - Marcel Dionne    - 234 PPG in 1348 GP 17.36% + 1

09 - Alex Ovechkin    - 233 PPG in 1011 GP 23.04%

10 - Dino Ciccarelli  - 232 PPG in 1232 GP 18.83%

Another stat for us to track... multi-goal games! With two goals last night, Ovi moved himself into sole possession of 5th overall. He is the highest ranking active player in multi-goal games:

1 - Brett Hull        - 158 MGG
2 - Teemu Selanne     - 131 MGG
3 - Jaromir Jagr      - 127 MGG
4 - Mario Lemieux     - 124 MGG
5 - Alex Ovechkin     - 123 MGG

As a side note, Wayne Fucking Gretzky only had 60 career multi-goal games in his career in the NHL??! How is that even possible??? *ahem*

*** OK, update *** Since 1987-1988. THAT makes a whole lot more sense! Looking for the full list somewhere...

On to other accomplishments!

Ovi's best sidekick, Nicklas Backstrom, scored assists last night, taking him to a career total of 601 and moving him into a tie with Glenn Anderson on the all-time assist leaderboard at 86th. Backy did it in 823 games to Anderson's 1,129, too. Last season, Backstrom had 50 assists. If he has 45 this year, he will move up the ladder as well... of course, he has 11 in 8 games played (!!!) so 45 should easily be within reach, barring injury (God forbid!) and he could wind up with more than that... time will, of course, tell, but here's Nicky's place in the all-time assist leaderboard. There are, of course, some active players ahead of him... but none ahead right this minute, and none other than Hossa, Zetterberg, and Getzlaf in reach this season, realistically.

65 - Bobby Orr         - 645 A in  667 GP It could happen!
66 - Martin St. Louis  - 642 A in 1134 GP
67 - Gary Suter        - 641 A in 1145 GP
68 - Dave Taylor       - 638 A in 1111 GP
69 - Daryl Sittler     - 637 A in 1096 GP
70 - Borje Salming     - 637 A in 1148 GP
71 - Peter Forsberg    - 636 A in  708 GP Possible
--------------------------------------------------
72 - Neal Broten       - 634 A in 1099 GP Probable
73 - Brad Richards     - 634 A in 1126 GP
74 - Theo Fleury       - 633 A in 1084 GP
75 - Ryan Getzlaf      - 631 A in  921 GP
76 - Mike Gartner      - 627 A in 1432 GP
77 - Andy Bathgate     - 624 A in 1432 GP
78 - Henrik Zetterberg - 623 A in 1082 GP
79 - Sergei Zubov      - 619 A in 1068 GP

[19-OCT-2018] #OviWatch - 613 and counting!

I am taking a chance and posting this today, despite it being a game day. If it puts the jinx on Ovi's goal scoring, I won't post on a game day again!!! Promise!

Last game's two goals put Our Hero into sole possession of 17th all-time goal-scorer. Next up are Jarome Iginla (625 G in 1554 GP) and Joe Sakic (625 G in 1378 GP). NHL.com reverses those two, but I say that Sakic is slightly more impressive due to scoring his 625 in fewer games than Iginla. Since Jágr is no longer playing in the NHL, having moved to play for HC Kladno in the 12t Czech Republic Hockey League (and unbelievably still playing at age 46), Ovi is the only active player in the top 17. At his current rate, 6 goals in 6 games, Ovi is on a goal per game pace, and is currently 5th behind Auston Matthews (10G in 8 GP), David Pastrnak (8G in 7GP), Kyle Palmieri (7G in 5 GP), and Nathan MacKinnon (7G in 7GP) in this year's Rocket Richard trophy race... of course, Ovi has bigger fish to fry, but...

01 - Wayne Gretzky    - 894 G in 1487 GP +281
02 - Gordie Howe      - 801 G in 1767 GP +188
03 - Jaromír Jágr     - 765 G in 1714 GP +152
04 - Brett Hull       - 741 G in 1269 GP +128
05 - Marcel Dionne    - 731 G in 1348 GP +118
06 - Phil Esposito    - 717 G in 1282 GP +104
07 - Mike Gartner     - 708 G in 1432 GP + 95
08 - Mark Messier     - 694 G in 1756 GP + 81
09 - Steve Yzerman    - 692 G in 1514 GP + 79
10 - Mario Lemieux    - 690 G in  915 GP + 77
11 - Teemu Selänne    - 684 G in 1451 GP + 71
12 - Luc Robataille   - 667 G in 1431 GP + 54 not bloody likely!
-----------------------------------------------------
13 - Brendan Shanahan - 656 G in 1431 GP + 43 outside chance
-----------------------------------------------------
14 - Dave Andreychuk  - 640 G in 1639 GP + 27 probable
15 - Joe Sakic        - 625 G in 1378 GP + 12
16 - Jarome Iginla    - 625 G in 1554 GP + 12

17 - Alex Ovechkin    - 613 G in 1009 GP

Both were power play goals, and that puts him tied for 9th all-time in that category. Next up, Marcel Dionne... Ovi's power play goal-per-game rate is still damned good, second only to Lemieux...

01 - Dave Andreychuk  - 274 PPG in 1639 GP 16.72% +42
02 - Brett Hull       - 265 PPG in 1269 GP 20.88% +33 not likely
------------------------------------------------------------
03 - Teemu Selanne    - 255 PPG in 1451 GP 17.57% +23 possible
------------------------------------------------------------
04 - Luc Robataille   - 247 PPG in 1431 GP 17.26% +15 probable
05 - Phil Esposito    - 246 PPG in 1282 GP 19.19% +14
06 - Brendan Shanahan - 237 PPG in 1524 GP 15.56% + 5
07 - Mario Lemieux    - 236 PPG in  915 GP 25.79% + 4
08 - Marcel Dionne    - 234 PPG in 1348 GP 17.36% + 2

09 - Alex Ovechkin    - 232 PPG in 1009 GP 23.10%
09 - Dino Ciccarelli  - 232 PPG in 1232 GP 18.83%

In his 1009 games, Ovi has taken 4921 shots. That's 9th place overall. Shots per game adds up to 4.877... Ovi hasn't had a game-winner yet this year, but the season's young, and tonight, we're taking on the Florida Panthers, who have also yet to have a game-winner this year (in four games played). Small sample size notwithstanding... hopefully the kitties won't pick the Caps to finally pounce on... Now, what else can I talk about?
